Camera Essentials Workshop for beginners of Photography. Take control of your photography and start having fun. This workshop will lift the lid on the mystery of photography and set your creativity free.

Modern digital cameras offer a daunting array of functions and possibilities. We won’t bombard you with loads of facts and technical information; we’re photographers ourselves, and we prefer a hands-on approach.
This workshop is based in the field, not in the studio, so we’ll be able to combine a little theory with lots of practical demonstrations and group exercises.
The journey begins with understanding your camera and learning how to navigate the controls and functions. You’ll learn about aperture, shutter speed, how to select the right lens and how to use it to create spectacular images. We’ll show you simple composition techniques to improve your photographs.
Then we’ll look at colour balance and how to produce different moods using the direction of light. We explain about ‘quality of light’ and how to use it to create mood and emotion.
You’ll see results by the end of the workshop, and will finish your first tutorial with confidence about how to handle camera to create images that go beyond the snapshot.

What should I bring? a digital SLR camera or compact camera with manual settings and a built-in flash. You can also bring a smartphone with appropriate apps to control settings. What not to bring?
Do not bring a tripod - we won't be needing this and you will end up carrying it for 4 hrs!

Street Photography
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to ‘see’ interesting detail is a practiced skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer’s eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the workshop is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.
We begin the workshop with an introduction and a morning coffee. We then explore the busy and colourful Town Hall and St Andrews Square area as it comes to life. We delve into the urban landscape that unfolds as cafes open and people start to fill the city streets. There are heritage arcades, laneways and eclectic speciality stores plus unique spaces with iconic images to capture. We’ll break for lunch to debrief: a great opportunity to exchange stories and to ask questions.
Our focus then shifts refining the morning’s experience, with your experienced tutor/s enhancing your techniques with one on-one coaching.
By the end of this unique workshop, you’ll have photographed an exciting visual story of the city’s of Sydney’s unique culture and its community.

MASTER MANUAL


Expand your understanding of the cameras manual mode and the relationship between aperture, shutter and ISO. This is start of your creative photographic journey!

Mastering Manual Mode is the next step in taking control of your camera so you can make informed decisions about your photography’s style and direction.
We’ll look at white balance metering and exposure compensation; how depth of field and understanding light can balance technical mastery with creative mindfulness; and we will explore methods professional photographers use to make informed creative decisions.
You’ll learn how professionals create expressive images, and practise using the characteristics of light to create mood and emotion in your final images.
You’ll come away with wonderful new skills that boost your technical and creative confidence.

FOCUS ON FLASH
Speedlite External Flash Units


This course will show you how to use your speedlite flash unit like a professional.
The modern flash unit is a sophisticated and very creative tool that will help you create flattering photographs of people and still life. After a brief introduction in the cafe we’ll set off to various locations around Glebe and Sydney Uni, where we familiarise ourselves with the flash unit and experiment with its functions and features.

To demonstrate the principles of using flash we’ll use a model to practise essential techniques such as fill-flash, direct flash and bounce flash, ‘rear curtain sync’ and ‘multi-flash’ techniques.
You’ll learn how to observe the characteristics of light to create mood and emotion in your image, and you’ll come away with wonderful new skills that enhance your images and take your enjoyment of photography to a new level.

Whether you want to document a historic event or capture the spirit of a city while you’re travelling, this popular Aperture Club adventure will teach you to photograph people, objects, architecture, street art, events, festivals and more.
Newtown is known for its diversity, thriving street culture and street art. It’s perfect for street photography: people, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, pets, historic buildings and unexpected surprises along the way!
We begin the workshop at Café Newtown, then explore the urban landscape that unfolds as markets set up, cafes open and people fill the streets. Our adventure takes us past antique shops, eclectic speciality stores and spaces heavy with street art in search of inspiration and creativity.
We’ll break for lunch to debrief: a great opportunity to exchange stories and to ask questions. Our focus then shifts refining the morning’s experience, with your experienced tutor/s enhancing your techniques with one-on-one coaching.
By the end of this unique workshop, you’ll have photographed a charming visual story of one of Sydney’s most iconic communities … and you’ll have learned sharp observation, quick reflexes and people skills to help you create high-impact images you’ll be proud of.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO CAPTURE THAT GREAT PORTRAIT ?
In this workshop you’ll explore the fundamentals of portraiture and learn techniques to inspire your creativity. You’ll explore the variables of natural light and how to achieve a variety of styles and looks that suited to your subject.

A powerful portrait can challenge and enlighten. Whether you’re taking portraits of family and friends, for business or for exhibition, it’s important to understand the tools and qualities that make portraiture compelling and memorable.
We look at decision-making processes and the technical aspects of composition and lighting. We examine white balance and how use contrast to create mood and atmosphere. We explore bouncing and diffusing light in outdoor situations.
Working with a model is a great way to learn how to pose and communicate with your subject. We give you opportunities to gain confidence in directing and communicating your creative ideas. Mastering portraiture will enable you to capture that something special about your subject!

Portraiture and its various genres of specialities. Equipment - what lenses work best for your specific shot ideas and what camera accessories to consider Natural Light - understand the mechanics of light, how light falls and how to direct it in the most effective way on your subject. Taking the controls - Looking at aperture and the importance of depth of field and the dramatic effect it has on your final photograph. Looking at when to use shutter speeds and understanding the histogram.
