Follow a steep track through podocarp bush to this cute and unique backcountry hut, complete with distinctive blue paint and funny signs from the old Masterton hospital inside. At the top of the hill you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountain range, including Mitre Peak, the highest mountain in the Tararua Forest Park. You might even spot a kaka from the nearby wildlife centre.

Follow this pleasant overnight track through a variety of terrain, including open tussock tops, mature forest and subalpine vegetation. Starting at the second Mangahao Dam, the well-marked path climbs up to the ridgeline, offering stunning views over the Tararua Range along the way. The final section follows the ridge to the cosy Burn Hut located in a small spur.
