Shepherd's Lookout - Boat & Hike Tour

Leave the crowds behind and discover a hidden side of Lake Wānaka on this scenic, self-guided walk with Wanaka Water Taxi. Enjoy a 20-minute cruise across the lake to the remote shores of Stevenson’s Arm — a privately accessed area only reachable by boat and not open to the public.

From the shoreline, follow a gentle lakeside farm track beneath Mount Burke before turning onto a narrow uphill bush trail through mānuka. The walk leads to two scenic lookouts with sweeping views across Lake Wānaka, Mou Waho Island, and the surrounding alpine ranges. The upper lookout is optional.

The track then descends to a secluded bay where you’ll have time to relax, picnic, or swim before your return water taxi ride back to Wānaka.

This self-guided experience lets you explore at your own pace along historic trails once used by shepherds on Mount Burke Station. Guided walks are available on request.

Come and join us on a trip to our favourite place on Lake Wanaka, Mou Waho Island. Where you can find an island, on a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island on the sea!

Mou Waho Island is a protected nature reserve and is home to many native New Zealand birds including the curious and flightless Weka.

A short walk takes you to the top of the island where you will be exposed to breathtaking panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its surrounding peaks.
Our water taxi leaves Wanaka Marina twice-daily travelling 15km up Lake Wanaka, passing Mou Tapu Island and the steep cliff of fisherman's cove to Mou Waho Island.
Your friendly and knowledgeable skipper will inform you of the fascinating geology of the alps and the glaciers that created the lake as you travel along its sparkling waters.
Stay for almost 2 hours on the island before heading back to shore, or go in the morning and spend the day as you please before catching the afternoon taxi home.
Departure times: 10 am & 2 pm.

"Because we love going there"
