Student Tour - 2 Hour Walk

Educational Programs are suitable for students or all age groups, encompassing a range of activities focusing on the abundant natural assets in and around the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape.
The programs are tailor-made to give participants ‘hands on’ learning experiences and combine curriculum-relevant content such as Indigenous Studies, Science, SOSE, Arts, Health & PE, Languages.
The area has a rich Aboriginal heritage and we offer students the opportunity to interact with the Gunditjmara people. Participants will learn about the history, culture, and lifestyle of the traditional Aboriginal inhabitants, and their interaction with this unique landscape and the area's unique flora and fauna.
Program A – 2 hours Visit Budj Bim National Park with your Gunditjmara cultural guide where students will undertake a guided cultural walk covering:

Lake Surprise Lava tunnels Cave Forest Wildlife including extensive koala population The site offers a scenic location with crater lake views and walks. The colour of the water changes, varying from deepest blue to green, depending on the lake sediments and levels of algae that are present.

Program B – 2 hours Enjoy a guided cultural walk of Tae Rak (Lake Condah) and the fish traps over the weir, with key features of interest including:

Extensive range of stone sites Stone walls Birdlife and other wildlife
Following this, you will visit Lake Condah Mission for a guided tour of the site which includes bluestone ruins and a reconstructed timber building that was part of the original settlement. Your Gunditjmara cultural guide will tell you about the history of the mission, and its significance in recent Gunditjmara history.

Z - Tae Rak Guided Cultural Walk | 1 Hr

Your Gunditjmara cultural guide will take you on an informative walk to see the Tae Rak (Lake Condah) wetlands. The lake is made up of 1,700 hectares of significant wetlands and stony rises right next to the historic lava flows of Budj Bim National Park.
The 1-hour tour takes participants on a short walk to the front of Lake Condah. Your guide will give you an overview of the Gunditjmara story of the lake, and point out its extensive marine and birdlife.
The tour finishes back at the Lake Condah (Tae Rak) Aquaculture Centre & Cafe.

Footwear
Please ensure you wear
appropriate footwear when participating in our cultural tours. We
recommend you wear enclosed sneakers, joggers or other sports shoes.
Hiking boots are also suitable. Sandals, thongs (flip
flops) or ladies' shoes with a heel of any height are not appropriate.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to take you on tour if you are not
wearing the correct footwear.

The tour starts with a visit to the Kurtonitj Indigenous Protected Area (IPA)
Kurtonitj (meaning 'crossing place') is in the centre of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape and has historical stone kooyang (eel) traps and stone channels, stone house sites and eel smoking trees. Your guide will show you these sites, as well as an area of lava flow featuring two weirs and a dam associated with trapping and holding kooyang.
After Kurtonitj visit Budj Bim National Park where you will enjoy morning tea. Budj Bim is a Gunditjmara name for Mount Eccles, an inactive volcano located within the Western Victorian Volcanic Plains. The Gunditjmara call the area ‘Tungatt Mirring’ or Stone Country, and it is where the legend of Budj Bim began. Your guide will take you on a cultural walk with key features of interest including Lake Surprise, lava tunnels, caves, forest and wildlife including an extensive koala population.

After Budj Bim National Park, return to the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café for lunch. (included)

After lunch, you will enjoy a Guided Cultural Walk of Tae Rak (Lake Condah) and the surrounding wetlands. Your guide will take you to the southern and eastern sides of the lake for a cultural talk and a look at the: Extensive range of stone aquaculture sites Stone walls Birdlife and other wildlife

Group - Kooyang Yana | Kooyang Walk | Full Day Tour

The tour starts with a visit to the Kurtonitj Indigenous Protected Area (IPA)

After Kurtonitj the tour continues on to Lake Gorrie where
you will enjoy morning tea before a short guided walk. The site is an
example of a well prserved drystone wall sheep wash, built by
Gunditjmara people and used by early pastoralists. Constructed in the
mid 1800’s, the drystone walls demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship
and skill in their construction and have been deemed of archaeological
significance by the State of Victoria. There are large numbers of
Karrayn (grey kangaroo) living here.

After Lake Gorrie, return to the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café for lunch.

After lunch, you will enjoy a Guided Cultural Walk of Tae Rak
(Lake Condah) and the surrounding wetlands. Your guide will take you to
the southern and eastern sides of the lake for a cultural talk and a
look at the:

After your walk, enjoy lunch at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Cafe (included).

After lunch, travel to Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area (15 mins) for a guided cultural walk of the Tyrendarra (IPA) which is an essential part of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape. Your guide will cover: Wetlands and Wildlife Walking Tracks / Boardwalks Stone Huts - Both Reconstructed and in-situ Fish Traps / Eel Baskets Tools
After this, you will visit Kurtonitj , with its historical stone kooyang (eel) traps and stone channels, stone housesites and eel smoking trees. Enjoy morning tea, before a guided walk. Your guide will show you these sites, as well as an area of lava flow featuring two weirs and a dam associated with trapping and holding kooyang.

After afternoon tea at Kurtonitj, you will transfer back to Heywood where the tour finishes at approx 4pm.
