Haramai - Day Tour

Discover the Stories of Ngāti Porou on Sacred Maunga Hikurangi

Step into the heart of Ngāti Porou and experience a side of Aotearoa that few visitors ever get to see.

Your journey begins at the base of Maunga Hikurangi, where you'll meet your Ngāti Porou guide before setting off on an exciting Can-Am adventure through the mountain's rugged landscapes. As you travel deeper into our ancestral homeland, you'll hear the stories, history and traditions that have connected Ngāti Porou to this land for generations.

Your destination is Te Takapau a Māui, a sacred site on Maunga Hikurangi and home to the iconic nine carved pou. Standing proudly against a spectacular mountain backdrop, these monumental carvings tell the story of Māui and his legendary feats, stories that remain an important part of Ngāti Porou identity today.

As you explore the site, your guide will share the history of our people, from the ancient stories of Māui to the arrival of our ancestors and the enduring connection between Ngāti Porou and this landscape. Through storytelling and cultural interpretation, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the people, places and traditions that make this region unique.

Surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, this immersive cultural experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with the living history of Ngāti Porou and discover a place few visitors have the privilege to experience.

A light lunch is included as part of your tour.

Te Urunga-Tu - Sunrise Tour

Experience the First Light of the World

Journey to sacred Maunga Hikurangi, regarded by Ngāti Porou (tribe/iwi) as the first place on Earth to greet the rising sun.

This exclusive iwi-led experience takes you deep into the heart of the New Zealand East Coast, far from the crowds and onto a mountain few people ever have the opportunity to visit. Guided by the Ngāti Porou tribe, you'll journey up the mountain in our rugged all-terrain vehicle, climbing through remote high-country landscapes to reach the sacred site of the nine pou (Māori carvings).

As the sun rises over Te Tairāwhiti, enjoy a light breakfast while taking in spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.  Here, you'll engage in Māori rituals and hear the stories of the nine monumental carvings that tell the story of Māui and his legendary adventures.

More than a sunrise tour, this is an authentic cultural experience that offers a rare insight into the history, traditions and way of life of the Ngāti Porou people. As the mountain's traditional guardians, our guides share stories and knowledge that can only be told by those who belong to this place.

If you're looking for an experience that is meaningful, off the beaten track and unlike anything else in Aotearoa, Maunga Hikurangi is well worth the journey.
