Explore the fanciful squares and fountains of Rome on a 2-hour walking tour that combines art and architecture with legends and ice cream! Start at the Piazza di Spagna at the base of the Spanish Steps. The 135 steps linked the historic Bourbon Spanish Embassy with the Trinità dei Monti church at the summit. Designed by the architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi, the Piazza di Spagna includes the interesting Fontana della Barcaccia, a Baroque fountain in the shape of a half-sunken ship. Continue to the Trevi district to see Rome’s most famous fountain. Set against the Palazzo Poli, the Trevi Fountain attracts legions of pilgrims who throw a coin in the water to ensure that one day they will return to Rome. Walk on to the Pantheon, dedicated to the Olympian gods and one of the best preserved monuments of Ancient Rome. Once inside, you can marvel at the world’s largest non-reinforced concrete dome. Your next stop will be the Piazza Navona, built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian. Now one of the most elaborate of Rome’s Baroque squares, among its many highlights is Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers). End at the Campo de’ Fiori (Field of Flowers), former site of a medieval market and used for public executions. In the center of the square you’ll see a bronze statue of the Dominican friar and philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burnt at the stake for heresy in 1600.
