⸻
Day 1: Perth to Margaret River
7:00 AM – Depart Perth
Your journey begins with a friendly pick-up from your Perth CBD accommodation. As we head south, settle into your comfortable seat and enjoy commentary from your McLeod Tours guide. We’ll share stories of the changing landscapes, Aboriginal culture, and early settler history that shaped Western Australia. Our mini-coach allows for a relaxed pace and small group experience. You’ll quickly feel the difference between a McLeod Tour and a standard coach trip. The further south we go, the more the pace of life slows — just as it should.
8:30 AM – Mandurah Foreshore Coffee Stop
Enjoy your morning coffee on the scenic Mandurah Foreshore. This peaceful waterfront is known for its dolphin sightings and gentle estuary breezes. We’ll visit a local favourite like Tods Café, nestled right on the water. Stretch your legs, enjoy the fresh air, and take in views across the Peel-Harvey Estuary. This is more than a coffee break — it’s a moment to shift gears into the easy rhythm of the South West. Don’t forget to bring your camera; the early light across the water is beautiful.
10:30 AM – Featured Wood Gallery & Museum
Step into a world of craftsmanship at this locally loved gallery in Australind. It’s home to the life’s work of master woodworker John Ablett, who transforms WA timbers like Jarrah, Marri and Sheoak into exquisite furniture and artwork. Beyond the pieces on display, you’ll find historical artefacts and tools that reflect the region’s timber heritage. The scent of wood shavings and the warm welcome from staff add to the charm. It’s a soulful, creative stop that surprises many guests. Even if you’re not a “gallery person”, this one has a story to tell.
12:30 PM – Lunch at The Hummingbird Café, Busselton
We stop in Busselton for a delicious lunch at The Hummingbird Café, loved for its fresh, generous meals and friendly atmosphere. Choose from a seasonal menu that includes hearty burgers, fresh salads, and local favourites. There are great vegetarian and gluten-free options too. This café supports local growers and producers, which you’ll taste in every bite. It’s a chance to refuel and relax before the next part of your journey. The vibe is casual, comfortable, and distinctly South West.
1:30 PM – Walk the Busselton Jetty – Coastal History & Ocean Views
Stretching 1.841 kilometres into Geographe Bay, the Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in 1865, it was vital to Busselton’s early timber and shipping industries, helping the town thrive as a port. Today, it stands as a proud reminder of the region’s colonial past and maritime trade. You’ll have around an hour to explore the jetty and foreshore at your own pace. Walk partway along its length, take in the views, or relax nearby with a coffee or local brew. It’s a chance to step back into history while enjoying one of WA’s most iconic coastal landmarks.
3:00 PM – WA’s First Bean-to-Bar Artisan Chocolate
Taste your way through a curated selection of single-origin chocolates at Gabriel Chocolate — Western Australia’s first bean-to-bar chocolate maker. Using ethically sourced cacao from around the world, every bar is crafted on-site. The focus is on quality, flavour, and origin, with each variety offering distinct tasting notes. It’s a delicious stop that showcases the South West’s creative food scene at its finest.
4:00 PM – Visit to the McLeod Family Farm
A special moment on tour as you visit our family’s own property, settled in 1902. Say hello to our friendly horses and, if lucky, spot kangaroos grazing in the paddocks. This short stop gives a glimpse into the life we live here and why we love this part of the world. We’re proud to share our backyard with you — no tourist polish, just real connection. It’s often the small, honest moments that guests remember most. Don’t be surprised if you leave with a smile and a story.
4:30 PM – A Promise Kept
Overlooking the Indian Ocean near Surfers Point, Prevelly Chapel is a quiet tribute to wartime bravery and gratitude. It was built by WWII veteran Geoffrey “Jeff” Edwards, who was sheltered by villagers in Crete during the 1941 battle. To honour their courage, Jeff fulfilled a vow to build this chapel, dedicating it to the Greek Orthodox Church. Completed in 1979, it remains a peaceful place of reflection and a powerful reminder of human kindness.
5:00 PM – Check-in at Margarets Beach Resort
Settle into your studio apartment at Margarets Beach Resort, just a short stroll from the sand at Gnarabup. Rooms are self-contained with kitchenette, laundry facilities, and a private outdoor area. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a full day of exploring. The on-site restaurant, The Common, offers great sunset views and a relaxed vibe. Watch the waves break over the reef and see where the river meets the sea — a dramatic meeting of calm and chaos. The viewpoint offers panoramic views of the coastline, with stories of surf legends and local history. It’s a quick stop, but visually stunning and rich in character. Don’t forget to ask your guide about Jack Robinson or John John Florence. This is a spot of natural beauty and international fame.
9:15 AM – Mammoth Cave Guided Tour
Step into a prehistoric wonder at Mammoth Cave, guided by your McLeod Tours host. Inside you’ll find towering chambers, ancient fossilised remains, and incredible crystal formations. Learn about the 35,000-year-old megafauna that once roamed this region. It’s easy to access, with boardwalks and subtle lighting. As caves go, this one is dramatic without being claustrophobic. It’s nature, science, and storytelling combined.
10:00 AM – Boranup Forest – Towering Trees & Tastes of the South West
Take a scenic drive through the majestic Karri trees of Boranup Forest, part of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Logged from the 1880s, this forest has regrown into one of the most beautiful and biodiverse pockets of the region. As we wind through the towering canopy, your guide will share stories of its past and significance today. We also stop for a brief honey tasting, showcasing varieties made from local trees like Jarrah, Karri, and Marri. It’s a simple, flavourful way to connect with the landscape and its hidden life.
10:45 AM – Hamelin Bay Beach Walk
Wander along the shores of Hamelin Bay, where giant stingrays often swim right up to the sand. This picturesque spot is steeped in maritime history, once home to a bustling timber port. The jetty ruins still remain, adding character to the scene. The water here is crystal clear, and the surrounding cliffs make for great photo ops. Depending on the tide, we may spot several stingrays. It’s peaceful, wild, and uniquely Western Australian.
11:45 AM – Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse – Where Oceans Meet
Stand at the most south-westerly point of Australia, where the Southern and Indian Oceans dramatically collide. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, built in 1895, remains the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia and a powerful symbol of maritime history. Guests have the option to join a guided tour and climb the tower for panoramic coastal views, or explore the scenic grounds and interactive Interpretive Centre. Inside, engaging displays share stories of shipwrecks, lighthouse keepers, and early navigation. Whether you climb or stay grounded, this iconic stop is rich in history and coastal beauty.
