mulaka milaythina / the hunting ground
Originally commissioned, produced and presented by the City of Clarence, the Clarence Jazz Festival, mulaka milaythina premiered at the Clarence Jazz Festival in February 2023.
Nunami (owner/operator Blak Led Tours) and Sarah Hamilton (who together developed takara nipaluna and mumara patrula) again joined forces to develop this new walking tour.
‘mulaka milaythina’/the hunting ground is a tour that speaks to the rich hunting grounds that long characterised the landscape of the Eastern shore and explores the stories that connect generations of Tasmanian Aboriginal people to each other and the lands that they continue to care for here.
Covering content from the frontier wars right through to Aboriginal land rights campaigns, First Nations people please note that aspects of the tour deal with Tasmania’s dark past and include references to people who have died.

About the Tour:
This is a historical story-telling tour that combines the history of lutruwita Tasmania with a style of presentation and storytelling like no other on the market. Initially developed through a performing arts lens and first presented through Ten Days on the Island Festival, truly unlike any other on the market.
Created by award-winning palawa and Walpiri woman Nunami Sculthorpe-Green, The walk follows the route taken in 1832 by members of the Aboriginal resistance, retracing their steps as they progressed to the old Government House to negotiate an end to the Black War. As the only Aboriginal-led tour of nipaluna/Hobart, this is a must-do experience
Patrons Advice :
This walking tour involves 90 minutes of brisk walking; along the way there are 15 stops, many with seating available, and a toilet break mid-way - the toilet is wheelchair accessible.
It’s a 1.4 km course beginning in the city and finishing near Salamanca Place.
Patrons are advised to dress for the weather
The walk is wheelchair/pram accessible with small sections of very gentle slopes.
The walk is an amplified tour and guests are required to wear in-ear headphones, you are welcome to bring your own ear buds/headphones however they must have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
