AJ's Circuit

Embark on an easy going journey with AJ's Circuit, a leisurely addition to the Ruakuri bush walk that promises a peaceful ride through the enchanting landscapes of Waitomo. The adventure begins at the Waitomo Ebikes base, inviting you to savour the tranquility that lies ahead.
As you pedal away, the road unfolds into a pleasant mix of sealed and gravel paths, spanning a leisurely 30 kilometers. Enjoy the anticipation as you gracefully navigate a bush track, a gentle introduction to the beauty awaiting you at the Waitomo Caves car park. A cautious crossing of the main road, with its rhythmic tourist traffic, adds a touch of suspense to your laid-back journey.
Meander into the unknown as you turn left into Tumutumu Road, encountering a gentle ascent that leads to a plateau, the heart of your adventure. A signpost invites you to the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, offering a choice: continue on the relaxed ride of AJ's Circuit or explore the charming Ruakuri Bush walk. The decision is yours, but the latter promises an experience well worth the effort.
For those opting to skip the bush walk, the journey unfolds as Tumutumu Road transforms into a gravel-clad ascent. With the freedom to choose your power level and gears, a steady climb provides panoramic views of a deep valley, farmland, and native forest. Reach the pinnacle for a leisurely downhill glide, followed by a scenic ride along Boddies Road, as the road flattens out and if the weather is clear look to your right where you’ll get views of Mt Ruapehu and a glimpse of Mt Ngauruhoe, two of the three volcanoes that make up the Central North Island Volcanic Plateau.
You’ll pass by two tourism operators, Kiwi Cave Rafting and Spellbound Glowworm & Cave Tours, after which you’ll soon be switching back to a sealed road. Once on the seal it's all downhill to the intersection of Boddies and Oparure Road where you’ll turn left. A word of caution here, although the speed limit for vehicles is 50km, heavy truck and trailer units frequent this road at times exceeding the speed limit but thankfully you’re only on this stretch for 1km. Along this stretch you’ll pass Te Wharekura o Maniapoto, a total immersion Maori language school. Not much further along you’ll see a signpost for the left turn into Fullerton Road. Traverse this peaceful country road, where steady ascents give way to mostly downhill glides, offering picturesque views back to Waitomo Village.
Sum up the joy of AJ's Circuit by allowing a leisurely 2-3 hours to soak in the entirety of this tranquil journey, especially if you include the Ruakuri Bush walk. It's a perfect introduction to the natural wonders of the area, inviting you to further embrace the charm of rides with Waitomo Ebikes.

The Forgotten Way eBike ride

Prepare to uncover a hidden gem of a ride that awaits your discovery – the Forgotten Way journey. This is the kind of trail that ebike riders relish, an uncharted marvel that showcases the best of what Waitomo Ebikes has to offer.
Picture this: A ride that captures the essence of wanderlust, a trail forged by one of our very own founders who sought to explore the unexplored on an ebike. Nestled within the collection of extraordinary ebike rides, this one stands out as a true jewel in the crown.
The escapade commences just 9km West of Waitomo Caves Village. Once you are dropped off at the beginning of Hauturu Road you can let the gravel road beneath your tires set the stage for a captivating journey ahead. Rated as a grade 2-3 ride, this route is an ideal blend of challenge and exhilaration, tailored perfectly for ebike riders seeking an authentic encounter with the untamed.
What sets this route apart? It’s not just the undulating terrain or the stunning vistas; it’s the sense of solitude as you pedal along a road that’s in general forgotten by motor vehicles, save for the local farmers who understand the art of coexisting with nature. With the road gently winding and narrowing at times, a respectful camaraderie forms between riders, urging them to keep left and embrace the shared experience.
As you venture deeper into this rugged paradise, keep in mind that connectivity is a luxury with limited cell phone coverage. Embrace the thrill of disconnecting from the digital world. However your safety is important and we advise that a minimum of two riders is required for this ride. An emergency locator beacon will also be provided. Additionally there are farm houses scattered along the route where you could ask for assistance if need be.
The journey unfurls with undulating terrain that soon transforms into a steady uphill climb. Your surroundings morph into a Karst wonderland – limestone landscapes that hold secrets of sinkholes, natural bridges, and underground rivers. Karst’s unique beauty accompanies you as you venture through sweeping views of the Waikato region, occasionally sharing the road with the untamed spirits of wild goats and sheep that have broken free from their confines.
As the ascent reaches its zenith, your eyes will be drawn to a fork in the road, a decision point that urges you to stay left along Hauturu Road. The trail continues with its rolling tapestry of farmland and forest, and at just the right moment, a panoramic view of Mt Ruapehu graces the horizon, a reward for your determination.
The descent that follows into the Awaroa Valley is nothing short of euphoric. A 5km rush that unveils a memorial paying homage to local pioneers, a testament to the storied history of this land. Gaze right, and the elusive Awaroa Falls beckon from a distance, a sight reserved for the eyes alone. As you navigate the descent, remember to embrace the moment, for speed and scenery converge in a dance of exhilaration.
Upon the valley floor, a cattle yard appears to your right, a haven for catching your breath and absorbing the panorama. Here, nature’s symphony plays, inviting you to linger and indulge in a bite to eat while showing the utmost respect for the environment that cradles you.
As you pedal forward, the Awaroa River becomes your companion, its waters a refreshing temptation on a sun-soaked day. The backdrop of native forests on steep hillsides paints a scene of untamed beauty, an ode to the land’s untouched spirit.
Crossing the Awaroa River bridge signals a shift into farmland, a gateway to the intersection of Hauturu and Kaimango roads. Turning right onto Kaimango Road marks the beginning of a gradual ascent, a 9km endeavour that may present false summits but ultimately rewards you with a 4km exhilarating downhill ride along the Honokiwi Road. The road transitions from gravel to sealed where you ride a further 8km to the pick up point at the Honokiwi Hall.

This is a ride that seamlessly marries challenge with enchantment. As the landscape unfolds around you, Waitomo Ebikes will be waiting offering a comforting hot drink to toast to your triumphs before returning you to our base.

Caves to Cinematic Landscapes

Embark on a captivating e-bike journey that takes you from near the world-renowned Waitomo Caves to either ride past Hobbit Film Location, Hairy Feet Film Site , a magical location that served as a backdrop for scenes in the "Hobbit" film trilogy, or take a slightly longer route continuing along quiet back country roads.

Both routes culminate at the charming Fat Pigeon Café in the quaint village of Piopio. This ride offers an extraordinary blend of scenery alive with sounds and sights, cinematic wonders, and culinary delights.
Your journey begins not far from the mystical Waitomo Caves, famous for their breathtaking glowworm displays and intricate limestone formations. We will transport you to the drop off point 14kms West of Waitomo. From there you’ll pedal through the lush New Zealand countryside, where you'll be surrounded by rolling hills, native forests, and serene farmlands, each turn revealing a new vista more stunning than the last. On a clear day you’ll see the Central North Island volcanoes including the North Island’s highest Mountain, Mt Ruapehu. As you gaze towards the west you will get to see the majestic Mt Taranaki standing alone.
In Māori tradition, Taranaki once dwelled with the other mountains – Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngāuruhoe – in the centre of the North Island. He and Tongariro fought a titanic battle for the favours of the beautiful, bush-clad Pīhanga . Taranaki was finally defeated and made his way to the west coast of the North Island, forming the Whanganui River during his flight. As he rested one night a spur of the Pouākai Range grew out and prevented him from continuing the following morning, so today he remains in splendid isolation in the west.
You’ll pedal through landscapes that reveal the diverse beauty of the region, each turn of the path offering new and picturesque sights. As you traverse this scenic route, enjoy the fresh air and the peaceful sounds of nature surrounding you. Marvel at the rolling green hills, dotted with grazing sheep and cattle with the occasional bunch of wild goats running in front of you. On occasion you may get to interact with the locals. Friendly farmers can be seen from time to time tending to their farms. It's not uncommon to exchange a wave or even stop for a brief talk. These moments offer a glimpse into the welcoming and hospitable spirit of the community.
The well-maintained back-country gravel roads ensure a smooth ride, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquil environment. Along the way, you might spot native birdlife and vibrant wildflowers, adding bursts of colour to the lush greenery. Take occasional breaks to capture the panoramic views and savor the serene moments of this unforgettable journey as you make your way to the 30km mark at Waitanguru where you choose which route to continue on.
One road will lead you past the Hairy Feet Film Site. If the site is open you may be able to join on one of the tours of the film set. This route from the 30km point is all on a sealed road which is sometimes shared with heavy vehicles such as stock and logging trucks. Caution is urged and please keep as far as possible to the left hand side of the road. Once past the Hairy Feet film site it's a further 17km to Piopio. This route is a total of 52km from the drop off point.
The other route you can take is turning left at Waitanguru onto Pungarehu Road at the 30km mark and continuing along a serene back-country gravel road for another 13km to Mairoa Road where you turn right and continue along a sealed road for another 13km to Piopio. This route is a total of 56km from the drop off point.
Either of these routes will get you to your final destination: the Fat Pigeon Café in Piopio. This popular café offers a perfect spot to relax and unwind. Savor a delicious meal, freshly brewed coffee, or a sweet treat as you reflect on your incredible journey.
These e-bike rides promise an unforgettable experience, combining the awe-inspiring beauty of Waitomo, the fantasy allure of the Hairy Feet Film Site, and the warm hospitality of the Fat Pigeon Café. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, film buff, or foodie, this adventure will leave you with cherished memories and a deeper connection to the heart of New Zealand.
