Hinchinbrook Rainforest walk & Eco Tour
Hinchinbrook Rainforest walk & Eco Tour
Eco Rainforest Walk 30
mins and Eco boat tour Approx 4 hrs – Departs Cardwell or Lucinda
We depart from Hinchinbrook Cove in Cardwell and talk about the
damage from Tropical Cyclone Yasi in 2012, the traditional owner’s history and
usage of the area when first settled, or if leaving from Lucinda we run down the length of the channel as we cruise towards the only Western
Access to Hinchinbrook Island.
The Haven Rainforest
After crossing the Channel which is around 5 klms to the shoreline of Hinchinbrook
Island we continue for about 20 minutes and arrive at The Haven, where we
disembark . We explore the day use area, which is also the location of the
Bandjin or Biyaygiri traditional fish traps and middens piles.
The stone fish traps located here are possibly the largest and
most complex coastal fish traps in North Queensland. We’ll tell you about how
they worked, their middens and their rock shelters and other reminders of
Aboriginal people’s presence. We’ll also tell you more of the history of the
Page family, who moved there from our previous location, Hectate Point. After
their Hectate Point sawmill failed, at the Haven, they grew small crops, grazed
sheep and extracted lime from midden piles. Page’s Creek is named after the
family.
We’ll also tell you about the Lewis Family, who in the
1930-1940’s established an early tourism venture, building a guest house and
cottages and establishing a coconut plantation.
We then walk the tropical 1km loop along Page’s Creek and though
beautiful rainforest and meandering rockpools where an abundance of amazing
birdlife and Flora is present. It’s also the only access to the western coast
of the island and Hinchinbrook Channel.
Deluge Inlet Rainforest
Once back on the boat we then follow the Hinchinbrook Island
shoreline for about 50 minutes and arrive at Deluge Inlet, a real highlight of
the day.
The inlet is the largest of all Hinchinbrook Island’s creeks,
with the mountains, Mt Bowen (1121m) and The Finger (1022m) towering above.
Lush vegetation is at the heart this unique wilderness location.
The inlet transitions from full saltwater, to brackish, to a rainforest stream.
It’s a true wonder of diversity, from mangroves to gum trees, Tea Tree and
Melaleuca lowlands, to untouched tropical rainforest and gin clear water. Once
we reach the furthest point we can navigate upstream, there’s a cool, safe
swimming hole, which is a perfect place to cool down on a hot day. A truly
amazing place, a natures amphitheatre, with unparalleled mountain views, and
photo opportunities.
Flats
We reboard the boat and begin to cruise back to Cardwell. On our
way there, it allows a bit more time too embrace Hinchinbrook’s natural beauty
and eco systems and stop to observe any marine wild life we see, which could be
Stingrays, Snub fin Dolphins, Dugong, Turtles, Barramundi, and schools of
mullet.
Upon arrival at Cardwell, we disembark and say our goodbyes and
you can head back to your accommodation
