Nestled at the base of Arrowtown Hill, as its affectionately known by the locals, Arrowtown is framed by vast mountain landscapes, the crisp blue of the Arrow River, and rolling countryside. Suiting cyclists looking for a leisurely cruise along meandering scenic trails, wine buffs keen to dive into the numerous cellar doors in Gibbston, and families looking for an achievable ride for the whole family, this tour is for you!
Enjoy a look around the historic township of Arrowtown where there is plenty to explore – historic goldmining ruins, galleries, the Lakes District Museum, shops and cafes galore. Then it's off to join the Arrow River Bridges Trail heading east towards Gibbston.
As the name suggests, the trail follows the Arrow River and travels over numerous bridges including the staggering Edgar Suspension Bridge, before connecting with the Gibbston River Trail at the Kawarau Bungy Bridge. Be sure to check out how many dare devils you can spot as you cross the bridge!
From there continue heading east along the trail above the Kawarau River. There are a number of cellar doors along the trail – for ease of navigation, our trail map indicates all the wineries along the route. Wine afficionados will look forward to great storytelling and wine tastings along the way.
Towards the end of the afternoon, navigate to Mt Rosa Wines, where the Kiwi Journeys depot is located. There might even be time for a cooling refreshment before continuing on your way.
This grade 2 trail is a great option for families where kids can ride along on their own bike on the gentle trail, or tag along on a tow-behind or trailer.

From Arthurs Point, cyclists after a leisurely ride can follow the Wharehuanui Trail heading towards Arrowtown. After a look Around the historic township of Arrowtown with plenty of shops, galleries and cafes to duck into, join the Arrow River Bridges Trail heading east towards Gibbston.
If you’re more of an adventurer and like a challenge, the new Shotover Gorge Trail from Arthurs Point is for you. With a 108m long tunnel delving into the gorge, and stunning scenery that winds along the Shotover River, this route connects easily with the Twin Rivers Trail which travels alongside both the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers towards Gibbston.
Whatever trail you choose, once you connect to the Gibbston River Trail at the Kawarau Bungy Bridge, be sure to see how many dare devils you can spot! Along the Gibbston River Trail

This self-guided eBike tour includes Premium eBike rental and shuttles for access at either end to connect with the trail. The Kawarau Gorge Trail follows the path of the early settlers who explored the region during the gold rush period. The trail defies engineering - traversing bluffs, crossing above the Kawarau River on clip-on bridges, meandering along paths that have been built and shaped to sit naturally within the challenging terrain.
Enjoy stunning scenery, including rocky outcrops, the magnificent Kawarau River, and historic gold mining settlements. Wind beneath the Nevis Bluff and enjoy access to previously inaccessible terrain through the gorge. The tour includes a stop at Carrick Cellar Door & Garden for a wine tasting flight & pizza lunch - a great way to top celebrate a ride well done! Then join the Lake Dunstan Trail as it winds along the Bannockburn Inlet towards the Cromwell Heritage Precinct and onward to the Kiwi Journeys depot in Cromwell.
