Hastings Caves, Tahune Airwalk and the Huon tasting trail
Overview
Travel through the Huon Valley into Tasmania's deep south for a day of forest walks, river scenery, underground geology and local produce. The route combines the Tahune Airwalk, Hastings Caves State Reserve and a relaxed tasting stop on the return to Hobart.
Highlights
Huonville and the Huon River
Pause in Huonville for takeaway coffee and supplies, then follow the Huon River while learning about the region's apple orchards, craft cider, boutique wine and salmon industry.
Tahune Airwalk
Spend approximately two hours exploring the reserve. Walk the 600-metre Airwalk through the eucalyptus canopy, take the 3.4-kilometre Swinging Bridges Track across the Huon and Picton rivers, or stay at ground level among ancient Huon pines.
Hastings Caves
Join an included guided tour through Australia's largest dolomite cave system and learn about its formations and geology. The surrounding reserve is habitat for platypus, quolls, pademelons and native birds, although sightings are not guaranteed.
Cider and apple-pie finish
On the return to Hobart, visit a local cider producer for the option of an alcoholic or non-alcoholic tasting paddle. A complimentary apple pie is included, subject to availability.
