Tour Details:
Following a smooth rail trail, cycle paths, wetland boardwalk, suspension bridges and country roads, this 84km trail is both relaxing and highly rewarding with a huge amount of variety in scenery.
As you ride this trail you will experience complete immersion into some of New Zealand’s rural heartland, with rolling farmlands and backcountry townships that will leave you with lasting memories of old fashioned kiwi hospitality.
You can ride anything from 15km per day through to 50km, (or more if you really want to!), and our support wagon will not be far away the whole time.
B&B accommodation options can also be sorted by your R&R Adventures staff for either a two or three night stay in the ‘winterless’ north.
As well as add on tours in the area or even a trip to the fantastic Waitangi Mountain Bike park for the more adventurous*
Itinerary:
Friday:
12:00-14:00 - Pickup from Auckland Pickup point, (or Auckland hotel)
14:00-17:30 - Travel to accommodation in Kaikohe (accommodation options from $100 - $200pp)
18:00 - Dinner by arrangement, (various options)
Saturday
09:00 - 09:15 - Transport from accommodation (after breakfast) to trail head
09:30 - 10:30 - Ride 14km from Kaikohe to Okaihau
10:30 - 10:45 - Morning tea in Okaihau
10:45 - 12:30 - Ride 15km from Okaihau to Sno's Farm
12:30 -13:15 - Lunch at Sno's Farm
13:15 - 15:15 - Ride 15km from Sno's farm to Horeke
15:15 - 16:00 - Packup bikes and visit Horeke Mission house, (historic site for the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi)
16:00 - 16:45 Travel back to accommodation
18:00 - Dinner by arrangement (various options)

Sunday:
09:00 - 09:15 - Transport from accommodation (after breakfast) to trail head
09:30 - 10:45 - Ride 15km from Kaikohe to Mangakahia
10:45 - 11:00 - Morning tea
11:00 - 13:00 - Ride 20km from Mangakahia to Taumarere
13:00 -13:45 - Lunch at Taumarere
13:45 - 14:00 - Transport to Ake Ake in shuttle vehicle
14:00 - 14:45 - Guided ride from Ake Ake to Opua (8km)
14:45 - 18:00 - Packup and travel back to Auckland drop-off point/hotel

Taniwha Dreams - Waikato River Trails (2-day)

The Waikato River trails are truly extraordinary for a backcountry riding experience in the Waikato area. You feel like you are in the back of beyond with lush bush on one side of the trail and the mighty river on the other, with glimpses of rolling green farmland on the far bank.

A genuine Kiwi iconic experience, and with so much variety of riding. Flowing light gravel cycle trail to more challenging bush trail sections that delight with their vistas.

Your tour coordinator has ridden these trails many times and knows all the best spots to match up with your riding ability, to offer you up to two full days of riding bliss. Take our recommendations, take advantage of our support, and take a ride into the old time back country of the central north Island.

There’s 100km of trail to explore along this network and each of the five sections offers different sights and a different experience. From an up close look at a several of the dams on the Waikato, across multiple swing bridges and boardwalks to just plain stunning riding alongside the river, these trails have it all.


This tour includes two nights' accommodation in a lakeside cottage in Mangakino.

Grade 2-3 riding, (not suitable for absolute beginner riders)
95% gravel off road trail, 5% road transitions
15-50km per day (1–4 hours riding) – choose your distance on the day..
